作品简介

画中女子是戈尔蒂娜·德·格鲁特(Gordina de Groot)，她与家人曾为梵高的名作《吃土豆的人》担任模特。为创作那幅画，梵高绘制了40余幅农民头像习作，本作便是其中之一——他希望通过这些练习提升人物画技艺。

梵高意在将农民描绘为与土地共生数百年的特殊群体。他在给弟弟提奥的信中写道："他们让人联想到泥土，有时仿佛就是用泥土塑造而成的。"

此作实为色彩研究的范本：梵高着重运用了互补色红与绿的对比(农妇泛红的面颊与暗绿色背景形成张力)，这种色彩实验预示了他后来在阿尔勒时期的鲜明用色风格。

This woman is Gordina de Groot, who posed with her family forThe Potato Eaters. To prepare for that painting, Van Gogh made over 40 studies of farmworkers' heads, including this one. He hoped this would make him a better figure painter.

Van Gogh wanted to portray peasants as people of a special kind, who had been working the land for centuries. 'They remind one of the earth, sometimes appear to have been modelled out of it,' Vincent wrote to his brother Theo.

This work was a study in colour. Van Gogh concentrated on thecomplementary coloursred and green.
